Kilian was born in 1988 in Caracas, Venezuela, into a family of musical and visual artists. With a world-renowned pianist/ composer uncle (Carlos Duarte) and a heavy metal drummer for a cousin, he discovered the bass guitar at age 12. Growing up in South Florida, he played in everything from metal groups to jazz big bands and immersed himself in the study of everything from ambient to classical.
An alumnus of Berklee College of music in Boston, Kilian had the privilege of studying with such bass greats as Matthew Garrison, Janek Gwizdala, Bruce Gertz, and Jim Stinnett. To date he has recorded on a dozen albums spanning everything from indie rock to ambient music. Now proficient in bass guitar, upright bass, guitar, banjo, and mandolin, Kilian tries to constantly expand his knowledge of music everyday.
Apart from traditional bass work, Kilian also produces music using only his bass and loop pedals in an attempt to push the instruments potential and musicality. Kilian has played for the Felix Martin Trio with Helicopria/Guitar Center Drum off Champion J.P. Bouvet, as well as occasionally with Thomas Pridgen/Jordan Ferreira project Elixir on Mute. He is currently playing with Dream Theater orchestrator and keyboard virtuoso Eren Basbug. As well as Serbian guitarist Alek Darson.
Since 2009 Kilian is also a columnist and reporter for Bass Musician Magazine, an all-online bass publication that covers everything bass related. He writes artist interviews, product news, and does video work.
