Nakya is a 20-year-old Tampa native who credits her musicianship to her large, musically gifted family, and her parents, Nathan and Felicia Westbrooks. Nakya is fluent in a range of musical styles including funk, DC go-go music, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, and jazz, to name a few. Her musical influences include Shelia E., Devon “Stix” Taylor, Aaron Spears, Dennis Chambers, and more.
Nakya’s passion for drumming began at the tender age of 4 when she could be heard beating on pots and pans, tapping her feet, and making beats on desks. By the age of 7, she was playing drums at various local churches and later performed with the likes of Beverly Crawford, Lisa Knowles, Casey J., Darwin Hobbs, and others.
Currently, Nakya is a student at Berklee. Thus far, she’s been presented with incredible opportunities such as working with and performing “The Show” directed by Rob Lewis, studied as well as being a part of an institution who founded and is the artistic director of the Institution Terry Lyne Carrington, performed with a 2021 American Idol top 3 finalist Grace Kinstler, currently playing for an American singer-songwriter Kehlani, and more.
Nakya was also in a rock band entitled, The Raine, which booked many gigs in Tampa and played on WMNF 88.5 FM Radio. She also participated in a Tampa Bucs commercial, and more.
Nakya plans to take her gift of music to higher heights and greater depths as she pursues her professional drumming career.
