California music accessories brand Gruv Gear is proud to feature Drummer Dave Owens. Dave is part of a family of prominent world-class musicians that heartily endorse Gruv Gear products.
Born in San Francisco and raised in Southern California David started playing orchestral percussion in 5th grade and continued through college. Late in High School David started playing drum set and found it to be his calling. During college he got a gig as the house drummer at Knott's Berry Farm playing every kind of music imaginable. Through his Knott's connections David had the pleasure of playing for Bill Medley's "Rock Around The Clock" shows at Bill's clubs called "The Hop".
During this time David was also playing with the original progressive rock band Jester. With his diversity of playing styles and reading ability David auditioned for Thomas Dolby and after 3 call backs, he got the gig. This led to three records with Thomas (Aliens Ate My Buick, Astronauts and Heretics, and The Gate to the Minds Eye) and touring all over the world.
After a lot of time on the road with Thomas Dolby, David decided to stay in town to be with his family. This led to countless jingles and a series of recording projects and gigs. From smooth jazz with guitarist Peter White, funky jazz with Scott Wilkie, latin jazz with Latinum, progressive jazz rock with Learning Curve, pop rock with Mothers Favorite Son's and a variety of Christian projects David remained very busy.
Starting in Oct. 2000 David played drums for the LA production of The Lion King at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. In January of 2003 (after playing more than 900 shows) The Lion King ended it's run in LA. Since leaving the Lion King pit David has been joyfully freelancing around LA.
Recently David has been playing and recording for The Harvest Ministry and touring all over the world with Franklin Graham and The Tommy Coomes Praise Band. He is also teaching drum set for Biola University and Hope International University and writes the Drumming Dynamics articles for Christian Musician Magazine.
